A Rude Awakening May 22, 2008

From Erin Carney:
Being a student while working a part-time job is a rude awakening for some people.  Watching T.V., listening to or playing music, reading books, exercising, and participating in any other leisure activities that we all love are simply glimpses of a life we used to have.  When we’re not in class, we are at work. When we’re not at work, we’re doing work. When we’re not doing work, we are probably asleep on the floor of the library…waiting for this routine to start over again in the morning.

Some professors want us to buy books for their classes; however, when we skip a class to go into work - to earn the $100 that this book costs - we are reprimanded by being marked absent.  I figured that by the time I was 23 years old, I’d be able to skip a class and take it upon myself to make up the missed assignments.  Have these teachers also remembered to send a note home to my parents, to tattle on me for skipping? What complicates matters even worse is when some professors warn us, “don’t skip my class to go on any job interviews;” however, at the same time, the Drexel co-op office tells us, “if you apply for a job, and get an interview…YOU MUST ATTEND, NO MATTER WHAT.”  Quite the catch 22.  This is often what it’s like dealing with jobs and school at the same time; everyone expects us to be in two places at the same time.
